Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is a fixed dental prosthesis that is designed to replace one or more missing teeth between two dental implants or two natural teeth that are still healthy. As its name implies, this type of restorative dental prosthesis literally bridges the gap between the two teeth on either side. Patients who have spent years unable to eat, speak, and smile comfortably are once again able to enjoy life to the fullest; with their fixed bridge in place, they can rest assured in the knowledge that their bite and smile are complete.

How Dental Bridges Work

In order to place a dental bridge, the two anchoring teeth (known as the abutment teeth) must be prepared to receive the crowns that will support the prosthesis. A small amount of enamel will be removed from the abutment teeth so that the crown will fit seamlessly into your existing dentition. Impressions are taken and used to create custom dental crowns that match the shade, size and shape of surrounding teeth for the most natural look possible. During this time, your replacement teeth (prosthetic teeth called pontics) will also be fabricated using durable, long-lasting dental porcelain, gold, alloys, or a combination of these. We will provide you with a temporary prosthesis to protect your prepared abutment teeth in the interim.

When it is time for your new bridge to be placed, the fit and feel of the prosthesis will be assessed before it is permanently affixed. We will ensure that your bridge looks and feels natural, allowing you to smile, eat, laugh, and speak the way you did with your own natural teeth. As with all of our restorative dentistry options, we are always happy to sit down with you and discuss your individual needs and expectations regarding your crown and bridge treatment.

Benefits of Dental Bridges

There are a variety of reasons that patients with missing teeth choose dental bridges to repair their incomplete smiles. In addition to enhancing your appearance by eliminating gaps between existing teeth, a bridge restores your ability to chew properly and speak clearly. The pressure exerted when you chew is distributed more evenly throughout the mouth, preventing further damage to your remaining teeth. This helps to decrease the likelihood that your natural teeth will begin to shift over time, thereby maintaining your overall oral health and the aesthetic appeal of your smile. Dental bridges also work to preserve the outward appearance of your face, supporting the muscles that surround your mouth so that you can keep your youthful look while improving your dental health.
