Your Dentist in Cupertino explains what to do in a Dental Emergency

Dental emergencies are inconvenient and frightening! It’s overwhelming to see a loved one suffering, especially if you’re not sure what to do. With the right dental team on your side, however, you can rest assured that everything will be fine. It also helps to have a little knowledge on how to handle common dental emergencies, so here are some helpful tips from your dentist in Cupertino.

Handling a Knocked Out Tooth

When you have a tooth that’s been knocked out, you need to move quickly as Dr. Shen and her team will have the best chance of saving your tooth during the first 60-90 minutes after your injury.

Transporting the tooth carefully will give it a better chance of survival, so try to handle it as little as possible. Place it back in its socket if you can. If that’s not an option, use milk to help keep the cells moist and alive.

A Chipped or Broken Tooth

If your tooth is broken, gather as many pieces as possible and bring them to Alpine Dental Care. Dr. Shen can determine the best procedure for preserving your tooth.

If you have a small chip on your tooth, while it may not need immediate attention, we encourage you to call us anyway. It will need to be smoothed in order to avoid irritating your tongue and soft tissues.

Dental Sensitivity and Pain

If your tooth is sensitive to hot and cold, and it’s causing a toothache, please contact Alpine Dental Care. This typically indicates a dental infection and will need to be treated. Root canal therapy can often remove the infection and preserve your tooth.

An infection left untreated will get worse, possibly spread, and could result in tooth loss, so please don’t wait for this pain to go away on its own.

A Broken or Lost Restoration

If you have an old dental crown or filling that becomes lost or broken, you’ll need to repair your tooth to avoid further damage. While it may not need immediate attention, we encourage you to call us and we can determine over the phone when you should be seen.

Please note that our dental implant, reconstructive, and surgical procedures - as well as any urgent dental care services - are performed at our Mountain View location, which is less than 15 minutes away from Alpine Dental Care. Smile by Design has a state-of-the-art facility that features all the latest technology. Dr. Donian Shen is extensively trained in the placement of dental implants, has many years of advanced dentistry experience, and is a sustaining member of the International Congress of Oral Implantology.
